Histopathological and molecular markers in prognostic evaluation of salivary mucoepidermoid carcinoma

Abstract: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common salivary gland malignancies, which used to be classified as mucoepidermoid tumor. Although MEC is composed basically of 3 different cell types: a mucin-producing cell, an epidermoid cell, and an intermediate cell, MEC may have different biological behaviors, which can be divided into low, moderate, and high grade. It is important to distinguish the histopathologic grade, in order to make appropriate treatment plan. In recent years, several prognostic molecular markers have been discovered, which are expected to be combined with the traditional histopathological classification to form a rating system for improving prognosis assessment of MEC.
