Abstract: PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical effects of 0.5% timolol maleate solution or oral propranolol in treating superficial infantile hemangiomas. METHODS: A total of 50 patients with superficial infantile hemangiomas were retrospectively analyzed, 27 cases received topical 0.5% timolol maleate solution alone (group A), and 23 cases received oral propranolol alone (group B). Patients were followed up for 12 months. SPSS18.0 software package was used to compare the difference of therapeutic efficacy, the response time and adverse reactions between group A and group B. RESULTS: The effectiveness of group A and group B was 63.0%and 65.2%, respectively. The therapeutic efficacy and response time after 12 months had no significant difference between group A and B (P>0.05). Compared with group B, group A had fewer adverse reactions(P<0.05). No serious adverse effects were encountered in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Topical 0.5% timolol maleate solution is effective and safe in the treatment of superficial infantile hemangiomas. It could be considered as the first-line treatment especially for superficial infantile hemangiomas.
