Research progress on tumor neurogenesis

Abstract: The reason why few studies have been made on "neurogenesis in tumors" was based on the old-fashioned notion that tumors were not able to induce growth of fresh nerve fibers. However, it now attracts huge interests among researchers as new evidence gradually emerged in recent years. The hypothesis is presented as follows: as we all know, nerve fibers accompany blood vessels and lymphatic vessels all over the human body. Since an extensive amount of knowledge has been obtained with regard to increased angiogenesis and lymph angiogenesis within tumors, chances are that there also exists neurogenesis as well. The mutual relationships and specific functions between new nerve fibers and tumors have also been wildly contemplated by some scholars. This review was intended to discuss the current understanding of this topic and some novel findings.
