Abstract: PURPOSE : To evaluate the application of improved condylectomy in adult intracapsular fracture of mandibular condyle. METHODS : Thirty-three adult patients with intracapsular fracture of mandibular condyle were treated by improved condylectomy, assisted by appropriate intermaxillary traction and mouth opening exercise after operation. RESULTS : More than 80% patients had normal occlusion, and the mouth opening reached over 35 mm 6 months after operation; no permanent facial nerve palsy and ankylosis were noted. CONCLUSIONS : Improved condylectomy is simple and fits in primary hospital, but has strict indication; appropriate selection of indication is the key to success.
