Abstract: PURPOSE: To study virtual monochromatic imaging by a recently introduced dental spectral cone beam CT (CBCT) for metal artifact reduction. METHODS: The study included 46 patients with metallic dental materials, they were randomly divided into 2 groups, with one group scanned with spectral CBCT, and another group scanned with traditional CBCT. Standard deviation (STD) and metal artifact index (MAI) were analyzed using independent sample t test or paired t test with SPSS 25.0 software package. RESULTS: Patient study showed that MAI of the virtual monochromatic images by spectral CBCT was significantly lower than that of the traditional images from the same imaging device and patient group (P<0.05). MAI of the virtual monochromatic images by the spectral CBCT was also significantly lower than that of the traditional images by traditional CBCT (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Virtual monochromatic imaging by spectral CBCT reduces metal artifact around dental metallic fillings.
