Abstract: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis(TMJOA) is a very common disease of temporomandibular joint disorders, which has a high morbidity and results in unbearable sufferings for patients, such as limitation of mouth opening, pain in the TMJ and clicking. The main pathological processes of TMJOA included cartilage degeneration, synovitis and adhesion formation. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the most potent angiogenic factors, recently, studies have showed that VEGF was found in the articular disc, condylar cartilage, synovial tissue and synovial fluid in TMJOA, and it is increasingly considered to be an important suspicious factor in the formation of TMJOA. This review summarized the current literature on the studies of VEGF on TMJOA.
